What an inflatable barrier is actually doing
An off-the-shelf inflatable flood gate holds water back with a pressurized bladder pressed into an opening. Inflate it, wedge it into the doorway, and the internal pressure pushes the skin outward against the jambs and the threshold to form a seal. The mechanism has a built-in tension worth understanding before you buy. The bladder has to be firm enough to resist the water pushing on one face, but compliant enough to conform to the imperfect surfaces of a real doorway. Manufacturers tune for a middle ground, and that middle ground is where the compromises live: too soft and it deforms under head pressure, too firm and it cannot take up the gap where your threshold slopes.
A rigid plank in a mounted channel avoids the trade-off entirely, because conforming is the channel's job and resisting is the plank's. Two parts, two functions, neither compromising for the other.
Puncture, pressure, and what fails first
Every inflatable system shares one vulnerability class that rigid systems do not have: a pressurized skin can lose pressure. Floodwater is not clean water. It carries branches, fence panels, roofing debris, and whatever the street had on it, all moving. A rigid aluminum plank that takes a strike from debris gets a dent. An inflated bladder that takes the same strike may get a leak, and a leaking barrier is not a slowly-degrading barrier — it is a barrier that stops holding.
There is a corollary about unattended time.
